We all know college is a time where money gets tight. But there are ways to save a little extra cash along the way.

Classes

  • Visit your advisor and ensure that you’re taking the appropriate classes at the correct times. This helps you avoid unnecessary classes that might require having to stay (and pay) an extra semester.
  • Pay for books wisely! Consider borrowing them from a library, buying them used, or renting them. Also, keep them in good condition so you can sell them when your course is complete.
  • Consider taking summer classes at your local community college if they are cheaper and the credits are transferable.

Watch How You Spend

  • Create a budget that fits your needs and make sure you stick to it.
  • Ask about student discounts before paying.
  • Use you meal plan rather than buying food.
  • If you do buy food for your dorm or apartment, buy generic brands rather than name-brand items and try to buy items that won’t go bad.
  • Invest in a coffee maker so you don’t have to buy more expensive coffee from a store or cafe.
  • Take advantage of free food at campus events and group gatherings.

Save Where You Can

  • Ditch cable and use subscription services, Red Box, or borrow TV shows and DVDs from friends.
  • Attend free events on campus.
  • Find low-cost hobbies like running and reading. Or learn a hobby that could earn you some extra cash, like knitting.
  • Use the free or low-cost resources at campus such as the health center, student gym, library, etc.
  • Work while in school and take advantage of jobs that might offer a discount for things you need like food or clothes.

#GrownUpLiving

  • Consider applying to be a Resident Advisor at your school. This saves money on student housing. Or consider renting an apartment with friends to save on bills.
  • Use what you have for furniture and décor before buying anything else.
  • Ask family members and friends for free furniture and coordinate with roommates to ensure you don’t have multiples of some items.
  • Compare rent prices and utility costs when apartment shopping. Conserve electricity by unplugging devices and appliances when not in use.

Above all else, be smart with your time and money – think before you impulse buy!
