Travel can be an exciting, eye-opening experience. It’s easy to get caught up in the thrill of adventure. But don’t forget about travel security and safety considerations while you’re travelling!

Follow these travel safety tips to help you take a trip that’s memorable for all the right reasons.

1. Do your research
Get to know your destination in depth before you arrive. Read traveler reviews and consult with locals for information about the safest neighborhoods, places to stay, and incidences of crime.

Know whom to call in an emergency, especially if travelling abroad. It is vital to get the contact information for the nearest embassy or consulate, police station, and other local emergency departments.

2. Make copies of important documents
Emergency situations can arise at any time and you never know when you might need a copy of your passport, driver’s license, or another form of identification. Scan these documents, save them online, and print out several hard copies. This way if you do need to get home, you won’t be rushing around last minute to get the proper documentation.

3. Do not share your travel plans
You never know who is listening or reading. If you post online that you are travelling, then everyone will know that your house will be empty. If you do want to share, make sure that you adjust your privacy settings on all your social media platforms.

However, you should provide a copy of your travel plans to a few trusted people, who can keep tabs on your whereabouts. Check in regularly with your contacts so they know you’re where you’re supposed to be.

4. Act as much as a local as you can
Respect the customs and culture wherever you are. Dress appropriately, be polite, and walk with confidence. Study your routes and transportation options before you leave the hotel and if you have to look at a map, make sure that you do it inconspicuously. Do not wear anything that projects affluence. Your best option is to leave your jewelry at home. It’s important to also vary your schedule, try not to leave at the same time every day.

5. Tell your financial institution where you are going
Try not travel with too much cash on hand, rather get travelers checks or a prepaid debit card and make sure that you also have an alternate means of payment, in the event that you may need it.

6. Protect your home while you’re away
Stop your mail delivery, before you leave for your trip. An overflowing mailbox can be an indicator that “no one is home”. This will also ensure important documents are not lost or stolen while you’re away. You can “stop mail delivery” through your local post office, either online, or in person.

Leave a car parked in your driveway. Ensure that you schedule regular gardening or snow removal. If you have a security system installed in your home, make sure that it is working properly. Have someone check on your home periodically while you’re away, especially if you are leaving on a longer trip.

Follow these travel safety tips, so you can rest easier knowing that you are better prepared for your vacation!
